See the many superb Tall Ships that take part in this unique race. In July 2010, the city of Antwerp hosts the start of the Tall Ships Race. Around 100 ships will be berthed in the beautiful harbour of Antwerp, where there will be a large number of special events and celebrations organised by the the Port of Antwerp and the City of Antwerp to make this another unforgettable event. The Tall Ships Race is a race with major international allure which celebrates the friendship between youngsters. 2010 will see the 'Cathedrals of the Sea' as guests in Antwerp for the 5th time.

YOUR HOTEL

You will stay for three nights at the 3-star Express by Holiday Inn Antwerp. The hotel is situated approximately 30 minutes walk from the main shopping area and heart of the city. The hotel has a breakfast room, bar area and all bedrooms have T.V. and telephone.
Optional 'SILVER SERVICE' departures will stay at the 4-star Ramada Plaza in Antwerp. The hotel has a restaurant and bar and all bedrooms have T.V. and telephone. Due to demand, other hotels of a similar standard may be used.

ITINERARY

  • Day 1 - Local departure by coach, then onwards to Belgium and our hotel in Antwerp for three nights.
  • Days 2 & 3 - Antwerp and Ghent.
  • Day 4 - Journey to Calais, then return home.

EXCURSIONS

Days 2 & 3 - The Tall Ships Races (included) and Ghent (optional). The Tall Ships Races are an internationally acclaimed annual competition organised by Sail Training International and held every summer in European waters. Each year around 100 vessels from 15-20 countries, crewed by some 5-6,000 young people, take part in this unique event that combines four days of activities in each port with racing or cruising-in-company between ports.

On Day 3 You can also choose to join an optional morning visit to the lovely town of Ghent. Affectionately known as 'the flower capital of Belgium', the medieval city of Ghent has a wealth of stunning architecture.

The 2010 Tall Ships Race in AntwerpIn the summer of 2010, from July 10th - 13th, Antwerp will be welcoming the Tall Ships Races. An annual regatta for small to large size sailings vessels, organised in European ports. The Tall Ships Races are organised by Sail Training International, their first race was held in 1956 when the theme was also friendships between youngsters of various countries. The sailing competition attracts 80 to 100 ships every summer. This chosen port of departure will once again provide the backdrop for the this prestigious event. A walk along the riverside with a view of the 'Cathedrals of the Sea' is a breathtaking experience. The largest tall ships will be moored along the Scheldekaaien, between het Steen and the Waagnatie. Other ships will tie up along the docks on het Eilandje, together with dozens of smaller vessels. On the Kattendijkdok, the Bonapartedok, the Willemdok and the Londenbrug, the array of masts and rigging will create a spectacular sight.

Antwerp is the second largest harbour of Europe, in the Northern region of Belgium. A splendid city with many architectural highlights, most of which date from the 16th and 17th century. Famous as the diamond center of the World! Most ladies will be surely head straight for the diamond district around the Railway Station...

The city of Antwerp also boasts various museums, a great zoo, many bars, cafes and street restaurants. You can safely stroll around magnificent buildings surrounding the square in pedestrionised shopping streets, where numerous Flemish fashion designers have created a reputation among the fashion cities in the world. You can browse around the maritime market on the Willemdok, while the kids have fun at the 'children’s village' at the Waagnatie. This is also a lively place for concerts and the musical spectacle Aquaphonia.
