Adventures in Pursuit of Pandas, China

At Newell’s Travel, we believe there’s no better way to recommend a destination than by experiencing it firsthand. Recently, two of our team members, Lucy from our Hayle branch and Myo from our Helston branch, returned from an incredible cultural adventure through China for nine days with Wendy Wu Tours. From solo travellers who met on holiday, to colleagues, friends and travel companions — sometimes the best part of travelling is the people you meet along the way. From walking the Great Wall and standing before the Terracotta Warriors to meeting giant pandas in Chengdu, they explored some of China’s most iconic sights and they’re excited to share their experience with you.

From Costa Rica to China

Sometimes the best travel adventures begin long before take-off.

Lucy and Myo’s journey to China began with a friendship formed on a solo Explore! tour of Costa Rica in 2023. What started as meeting fellow travellers on holiday soon turned into a lasting friendship, with the pair keeping in touch long after they returned home.

When Lucy discovered an incredible Wendy Wu Tours itinerary to China, she invited Myo to join her. By then, their friendship had taken an exciting new turn — Myo had relocated to Cornwall and joined the Newell’s Travel team in Helston, where she now works alongside Lucy.

And their adventures didn’t stop there! After enjoying another tour together, this time to China, the pair flew direct from Heathrow with China Southern Airlines, ready to explore one of the world’s most fascinating destinations.

Beijing – Ancient Wonders and Iconic Landmarks

Their adventure began with visits to the Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square and the spectacular Forbidden City, before ending the day with a traditional Chinese Opera performance.

The highlight was undoubtedly the Great Wall of China. Arriving before the crowds made the experience even more memorable, and while the climb was challenging, the incredible views made it all worthwhile. The day was rounded off with visits to the beautiful Summer Palace, a spectacular acrobatic show and a traditional Peking duck dinner.

Xi’an – History Comes to Life

Travelling by high-speed bullet train was an experience in itself, reaching speeds of over 200mph while gliding comfortably through the countryside.

Xi’an offered a wonderful blend of history and culture. They explored the ancient city walls, dressed in traditional Ming Dynasty costumes for an evening stroll, cycled along the walls and, of course, visited the incredible Terracotta Warriors. Seeing this UNESCO World Heritage Site in person is something they’ll never forget. A traditional dumpling banquet and the spectacular Tang Palace Show provided the perfect end to an unforgettable day

Chengdu – Meeting China’s Famous Pandas

Their final stop was Chengdu, home to China’s most famous residents.

Visiting both panda conservation centres gave them the chance to watch giant pandas and red pandas up close while learning about the incredible work being done to protect these amazing animals. They also explored bustling Jinli Street, relaxed in People’s Park, visited a traditional tea house and enjoyed one last evening reflecting on an incredible journey.

China with Wendy Wu’s cannot be beat!

Despite being just, a nine-night tour, Wendy Wu Tours packed in an incredible variety of experiences. From ancient landmarks and vibrant cities to high-speed rail and unforgettable panda encounters, every day offered something new.

China exceeded all expectations, with excellent organisation, comfortable hotels and knowledgeable guides throughout. If China is on your travel wish list, Lucy and Myo wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this fantastic tour.
