This May, the Newell’s Travel team had the incredible opportunity to attend the CLIA Conference 2025 in Southampton. From motivational workshops to immersive ship visits and lively networking, our agents returned inspired, armed with new knowledge, and ready to help clients explore the world by sea.
Introduction: A Journey of Discovery
“We had the chance to attend our first CLIA conference and were immediately immersed in the world of cruising. Staying at the Premier Inn in Southampton gave us the perfect base to explore the city and attend all the events. From the very first day, it was clear this would be a trip full of learning, adventure, and inspiration.
Arriving early allowed us to attend a workshop onboard the Swan Hellenic Minerva in Portsmouth. We experienced presentations from various expedition cruise lines and speakers including National Geographic, toured the ship at our own pace, and enjoyed a buffet lunch that set the tone for an incredible few days.
Workshops & Motivational Talks
Day one included sessions like ‘New to Selling Cruise,’ which focused on positivity, attitude, and how to incorporate these into our daily work life. We heard from cruise lines including Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Fred Olsen. Inspirational talks from motivational speakers such as James Cracknell left us feeling energized and ready to tackle new challenges.
Beyond expectations, the presentations covered a variety of cruise lines, including luxury and expedition offerings. One highlight was learning about Explora Journeys, a small luxury cruise line with itineraries that immediately became a favourite. We were inspired to sell new products with confidence and excitement.
Ship Visits: Experiencing Cruise Life Firsthand
P&O Britannia
The recently refurbished Britannia was a highlight. Spacious cabins, modern décor, live entertainment, pools for all ages, a luxurious spa, and diverse dining options made it clear why this ship is a favourite. We enjoyed a delicious lunch onboard, watched fantastic shows, and took full advantage of exploring all the ship’s facilities. Britannia truly exceeded our expectations and gave us the confidence to recommend it to clients.
Princess Sun
Princess Sun was a beautiful ship with a stunning atrium and luxurious bars and spa. The staff were welcoming and went above and beyond to make sure we had a good experience and the food was delicious.
Swan Hellenic Minerva
The Minerva offered a more intimate and educational experience, with presentations from expedition cruise lines and National Geographic. Touring the ship at our own pace and enjoying a buffet lunch made it a memorable start to the conference.
Trade Fair & Sailaway Party
The trade fair at Southampton docks was a treasure trove of opportunities to meet cruise and river cruise suppliers. We connected with Riviera Travel, Avalon, NCL, Cunard, Oceania, Ama Waterways, and more. Collecting brochures and goodies allowed us to bring back valuable information for our colleagues and clients.
The evening’s Sailaway Party in the Guildhall was a fun-filled celebration with entertainment from Scott Mills and Miss Ballooniverse. Dancing, balloon creations, and buffet food made it a night to remember.
Accommodation & Practical Tips
Staying at the Premier Inn in Southampton was comfortable and convenient. The rooms were cosy, and breakfast provided the perfect start to busy days of workshops, ship tours, and networking. Top tips from our team: Go with an open mind — ships can change dramatically after refurbishments — and take advantage of exploring the whole ship to fully appreciate its facilities.
