Our Newquay Assistant Manager Laura Emmett recently returned from an unforgettable sailing adventure onboard the beautiful Star Clippers Star Clipper. From emotional sail aways and stargazing at sea to exploring Malaga, Granada and Ibiza, Laura shares why this unique style of cruising completely captured her heart and why she’s already dreaming of her next voyage.
Sailing Into the Golden Age
“Looking for some travel inspiration? A new adventure to fuel your wanderlust? Perhaps you’ve already heard of Star Clippers and you’re debating whether or not to book a trip. Or perhaps this blog post is the first you are hearing about the company. Well either way, you are in luck! Because this is a travel experience you won’t want to miss.
Having recently returned from my very first sailing onboard Star Clipper, I’ve genuinely been daydreaming about going back ever since. Spending four nights onboard this beautiful tall ship, waking up in a new destination each day and meeting travellers from all over the world was unlike any cruise experience I’ve had before. This isn’t cruising as you know it, it’s something far more magical.
The Adventure Begins
I flew from Bristol with my colleagues before arriving into Malaga, where we spent one night ahead of boarding the ship the following afternoon. The excitement really started building as we arrived at Malaga Marina and saw Star Clipper waiting for us. From the moment I spotted the towering masts and beautiful open deck, I couldn’t stop smiling.
Stepping onboard felt like travelling back in time to the golden age of sailing. The polished brass, gleaming woodwork and nautical décor instantly created this wonderful old-world atmosphere, but with all the modern comforts you could want.
Our itinerary included Malaga, Motril & Granada, a relaxing sea day, Ibiza, and Palma, Majorca. Every single stop brought something completely different.
Malaga & The Most Emotional Sail Away
Before boarding, we spent time exploring Malaga, a city that perfectly blends traditional Spanish culture with modern city life. As the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, Malaga is packed with history, lively tapas bars, bustling streets and beautiful landmarks like the Malaga Cathedral and Alcazaba of Malaga. But the real magic began once we set sail.
As darkness fell and the sails were raised, the iconic soundtrack Conquest of Paradise played across the ship’s speakers. Honestly, it was incredibly emotional. Between the dramatic music, the glowing lights of Malaga disappearing into the distance and the excitement buzzing around the deck, it created one of those unforgettable travel moments that stays with you long after you return home.
Granada & Moorish Beauty
The next morning, after a fabulous breakfast onboard, we travelled to Granada. Nestled beneath the Sierra Nevada mountains, Granada is famous for its Moorish architecture, winding streets and fascinating blend of Spanish and Islamic culture. Visiting the incredible Alhambra was a definite highlight of the trip. From the historic atmosphere to the stunning scenery, it’s easy to see why Granada captures the hearts of so many visitors.
Back onboard later that evening, we enjoyed another amazing dinner with exquisite table service before everyone dispersed to enjoy the ship in their own way, some relaxing in the piano bar, others dancing on deck, while I was perfectly happy simply standing on the top deck enjoying the sea breeze and starry skies.
Sea Days Done Properly
Sea days onboard Star Clipper are wonderfully relaxing. Unlike larger cruise ships, there’s no pressure, no crowds and no rushing around trying to reserve sunbeds. Life onboard feels blissfully calm, much like being on a private yacht. Whether you want to lounge on deck, take a dip in one of the pools, enjoy a cocktail, try water sports from the marina platform or simply switch off with a book, there’s space to completely unwind.
Conquering My Fear in Ibiza!
As we sailed into Ibiza, I surprised myself by climbing part of the crow’s nest! I honestly never thought I’d do it, but once you’re onboard Star Clipper, you quickly find yourself embracing the adventure. The views from above the deck were incredible and it became one of the most memorable moments of the entire trip.
Afterwards, we explored Ibiza Town, including the beautiful old quarter of Dalt Vila with its cobbled streets, historic walls and stunning sea views. Ibiza really does offer the perfect mix of lively atmosphere and Mediterranean charm.
What Makes Star Clippers So Special?
What I loved most about Star Clippers is how different it feels from traditional cruising. With just 166 guests onboard Star Clipper, it never feels crowded or overwhelming. Instead, there’s this wonderfully relaxed, friendly atmosphere where guests mingle easily with both the crew and fellow travellers.
The ship itself is stunning too, with expansive teak decks, elegant dining spaces, cosy bars and beautiful nautical touches throughout. Every corner feels thoughtfully designed to celebrate the romance of classic sailing.
